I made a thing on that website again. Donald Trump made me do it.

Couldn’t help but join the alternate reality party that is 2016.

Wanted to go down with the ship, as they say. This is a huge mistake.

United Scapegoats of America

A few weeks after what will be remembered as a strange day in America for many people, it is fair to say that certain marginalized groups are not feeling these Trumpian vibes. Protests continue in numerous cities (#notmypresident), global political leaders have sent their warnings, white supremacists, neo-nazis, and fascist dictators have sent their support, all while hate crimes against minorities have increased.

Opening up a history book can tell us exactly where behaviors like this lead… and that is an overwhelming realization. But these uncertain times have me finding hope in the words of uncle Rumi; where there is ruin, there is room for treasure. If anyone see’s this election result as a ruinous mark on history, we best start creating room for that treasure (disclaimer: not real uncle). Even when it seems difficult, as a muslim I’m finding real treasure and comfort in the teachings of Islam. It is even more important now to use the platform of our religion; one of love, unity and social justice, in order to lift up our communities and form solidarities with marginalized people. Continuing efforts to strengthen understanding, civil dialogue, and justice among ALL people is the only way forward.

A place to start may be some serious contemplation, and true self-reflection about the injustices we witness and choose to be complacent about.

So If you are black, muslim, gay, an immigrant, a journalist, a woman, a refugee, a veteran, disabled, Chinese, Iranian, Mexican, or any combination of these identifiers, congratulations. You have now gained admission into a special group of people called the United Scapegoats of America. As a visibly muslim individual, I am pretty excited about my involuntary initiation into this group and I have two words for our inspirational leader Donald Trump… Thank you.

Thank you Donald, for holding a mirror up to the ill-wills and schisms present in our society. The real question is, what do we plan on doing about it?
